TikTok creator spotlight @madewithmudpottery
On TikTok, we're all about trying something new, whether it's trying out your first 5k, or learning how to throw your own pottery. Our campaign It starts on TikTok. is all about encouraging people to give something new a go, and features some of the incredible creators and businesses who have been sharing their experiences on our platform. So, this week, we're speaking to another of the creators who is part of the campaign - Nicola, aka @madewithmudpottery!
Nicola first began working with clay over 10 years ago as a hand and foot print business. Since then, she has gone on to run her own studio whilst continuing to grow her successful pottery brand, @madewithmudpottery. Alongside sharing insights into life behind a small business and a start to finish look at making some of her most successful designs, she has been posting some helpful how-to's on throwing your own pottery, perfect for those trying it out for the first time!
Alongside pieces you'd expect to see from a handthrown pottery business, Nicola has also created a range to help those individuals with special needs enjoy some beautiful pieces. The DigniTEA range offers mugs with varying handles, shapes, and cutouts to be inclusive for a wide range of disabilities.
With over 60k followers, it's clear that @madewithmudpottery continues to go from strength to strength! Earlier this week, we sat down with Nicola to talk about her business, her TikTok account, and what it's been like to be part of the It starts on TikTok campaign.
Our campaign, It starts on TikTok is all about the amazing things you can discover on TikTok. If you could inspire someone to start something new this year, what would it be?
As soon as everyone finds out I’m a potter they always reminisce about how they did it at school and loved it. Most people love to do it but don’t know how to start - I tell them grab yourself a bag of air drying clay and get stuck in. There’s so many resources like TikTok to get you started, so just start!
Why did you decide to start creating content about your pottery business on TikTok?
It wasn’t a conscious decision to share my business, but more to share my pottery. The business side grew organically as I shared my pottery and techniques. I love TikTok and what everyone was doing on here, so it gave me a way to join in. I genuinely enjoy creating content, it’s like another creative hobby.
What other creators do you follow on TikTok?
I follow such a variety of creators like @scottevandavis for a daily dose of funny sarcasm and an amazing mug collection! I’ve also followed potters from around the world. It’s great to connect with other creative small businesses like @jam_first, @pampetersdesigns and @a_dad_called_brian.
What is your goal on TikTok?
My goal is to enjoy it and all it brings! I am so grateful for the way social media spreads the word about my DigniTEA mugs - it was so unexpected. It also gives me another creative outlet where I can have a bit of fun with content.
What is your favourite TikTok video you have made to date and why?
My absolute favourite TikTok is one that features my dog Buddy and my pottery studio. Everyone connects pottery with ‘that scene’ from ghost. So I made a TikTok where Buddy sneaks into the studio and throws a dog bowl to unchained melody, it will always be my favourite!
Finally, what else is on your For You feed?!
My For You Feed is mostly funny candid clips and crafts with a side portion of talking button dogs! I love seeing artists of all kinds and what they’re creating. I’ve decided to give the guitar another go so I’m getting a lot of super handy tips and inspiration for that.
