TikTok Creator Spotlight @Saeedahhaque
Fashion Month is in full swing and with attention turning to London this week, who better to spotlight than designer @Saeedahhaque.
Part of the #TikTokFashion Collective, Saeedah Haque is a self-taught designer from North-London with a mission to take back the narrative of Muslim women through her reinterpretation of the abaya into utility wear. Her designs have been supported by Kehlani, AJ Tracey, and Avelino, to name a few
Saeedah has over 235k followers to her TikTok page with her unique videos that seamlessly fuse traditional Islamic clothing with streetwear and popular culture. From Barbie to Spiderman, Saeedah's concepts and designs are breaking down stereotypes and education and inspiring the community with her unique take on modest fashion.
For her trailblazing efforts, Saeedah was able to make her dream of working with Nike a reality, designing and releasing a limited collection in partnership with the streetwear giant, where she showcased the first Nike abaya and niqab. She's also been able to launch Saeedah Haque, her eponymous brand, which is the world's first streetwear Abaya label.
We caught up with Saeedah ahead of London Fashion Week to discuss her impact, the importance of community, and how it feels to be part of the #TikTokFashion collective.
Congratulations on being part of the first #TikTokFashion creator collective! What is your favourite thing about fashion and style content on TikTok?
I love that I don’t know what to expect – it keeps things fresh and interesting. I think it’s a reason why others have also found me because I’m so niche yet have the support of such a diverse audience. Sometimes you don’t know what you’ll resonate with, whether it’s a completely new designer, style or career path.
Why did you decide to start creating content on TikTok?
Honestly – representation! I never saw anyone like me in the industry and I think if I did, I would have had the guts to apply to fashion school back then. The app gave me a platform to showcase my talent, my ideas and how I see the world. The feedback from my audience made me realise the impact I was having online was making a difference IRL.
What other fashion creators on TikTok do you follow?
@e_m.w is an incredible artist from NYC who creates concepts for streetwear collabs with Anime characters. I love that TikTok brings art from across the world right to your screen and always inspires me to keep things fresh and new. Sometimes in the real world you have to wait for the right time to introduce a new concept, but on TikTok nothing is ever too niche and the right audience will find you.
What is your goal on TikTok?
To create a community and have an impact on the world.
What is your favourite TikTok video you have made to date and why?
I love showcasing my concept videos because they’re ideas for garments I don’t have the resources to make yet. During the FIFA World Cup in Qatar I created a modest collection bringing the Abaya and football together – and the community loved it because it just made sense, yet they hadn’t seen anything like it before.
What piece of advice would you give to someone interested in fashion?
Carve your own identity that is true to yourself even if you haven’t seen it done before.
Finally, what else is on your For You feed?!
Lots of behind the scenes from across the world from design to model vlogs. Watching all the different perspectives from the industry makes you realise how huge and diverse it is.
