Saturday, 27 January marks Holocaust Memorial Day, an important moment of commemoration amongst communities around the world, both for victims of the Holocaust and other genocides in recent memory.
We have a diverse Jewish community on TikTok, from relatives of those who survived the Holocaust like @lilyebert to younger creators like @tumblemaiadryer.
As we observe this important date, we've worked with some of Jewish creators to launch our latest #TikTokUnpacks series, aiming to educate our community about antisemitism and Jewish History.
This week, we're spotlighting one of the creators from the Jewish community, who's taking part in our latest #TikTokUnpacks series. Meet @nickyjkelvin!
Nicky often shares fun insights into the Jewish community as part of his 'Jewish Stuff' series. Alongside talking about his Jewish heritage and faith, Nicky is a passionate travel creator, sharing his amazing looking travels, hacks to get a cheaper holdiday, and his passion for the aviation industry!
Earlier this week, we caught up with him to discuss all things Holocaust Memorial Day, as well as his travel content and creators he can't get enough of.
On Saturday, 27 January, we will recognise Holocaust Memorial day. What does this mean to you?
With surging and terrifying antisemitism across the world, especially in the UK, commemorating Holocaust Memorial Day has never been more important - as antisemitism was the driving factor behind the murder of 6 million jews by the Nazis. As a proud jew, brought up in a traditional Jewish community, the Holocaust was a close reality for us. We grew up with Holocaust survivors in our community and remembering the pain and loss while spreading knowledge and awareness to ensure the same could never happen again, is, and was absolutely central to Jewish culture and my personal beliefs.
We have loved watching your 'Jewish stuff' series, have you been surprised by the reaction from the community?
The reaction to my Jewish Stuff series has been wonderful. I was not so surprised by the very positive reaction from the Jewish community, but more so from the warm and positive reactions from people who aren't Jewish. So many people are fascinated by our incredibly bizarre traditions and the appetite for more was most surprising.
What other Jewish creators do you follow on TikTok?
I love what Lily Ebert and Dov Forman (@lilyebert) have done in bringing a very real and raw education to the masses, specifically on the topics of antisemitism and the holocaust. For such a devastating topic, they have brought warmth and hope.
I also adore Jake Cohen (@jakecohen), a NYC based chef who brings humour and camp fabulousness to jewish cooking and especially delicious jewish bread, challah!
Finally Cangy Gigi (@candygigiyoung). She is one of the funniest comedians out there. I have been obsessed with her since coming across her prank calls on TikTok which are VERY risque. I could listen to her characters for days.
What is your goal on TikTok?
To help more and more people to travel better by bringing them my expert tips and tricks. Professionally, I'm a travel expert (although I am also a solicitor!) and that's my most important niche, especially airmiles, loyalty programmes and also airline and flight hacks and reviews. I want to inspire people to travel more and in the right way for them.
While I reach new audiences with this travel expertise, I definitely want to continue to entertain, bring other things that I love that I know others will too, and continue to spread the jewish love!
What is your favourite TikTok video you have made to date and why?
I love a cheeky nod to my AvGeek (aviation geek) personality and I know so many others share my obsession. In this video I was watching Adele at her first post-COVID show at Hyde Park, and couldn't help but constantly watch the planes heading to Heathrow. Millions agreed with me and were doing the same, so really connected with my video. After I posted it, one of my followers had actually taken a photo from a plane flying over the concert and posted it on TikTok tagging me!
What else is on your For You feed?!
My feed is awash with the anti-pirate measures being put on the ships in the Red Sea with the YOOO HOOO sound! Add to that quite a lot of Golden Retrievers and cats making weird noises (I didn't like cats until my FYP brought them to me a couple of months ago).
Finally, if you could recommend one place for us to visit in 2024 where would it be?!
I'm writing to you right now from Hoi An in Vietnam. I've just spent a couple of weeks floating between Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos and can't recommend this trio enough!
