What first inspired you to create on TikTok?
I love the way TikTok is built around interest based followings rather than who you know. I enjoyed having a feed that showed me topics I wanted to explore or videos that would make me laugh, cry or both! Because of this, I felt inspired to create content on a particular topic I love (financial literacy) and see if I could build a community around it.
Have you been surprised by the response to your content?
Completely surprised. When I began my journey of becoming financially literate and learning how money really works, I did it more or less on my own. I was great to find there are others out there that also want to explore this topic and have money conversations.
It also made me realise how many other people feel stuck in their finances like I used to, even though they were well educated and have a decent income. It highlighted the big gap in education when it comes to money.
What is your goal on TikTok?
To help people understand their money better so they can get unstuck in their finances, feel more confident, and have a positive relationship with money. I want people to see that financial literacy doesn’t have to be boring or complicated. In fact, the principles are SO simple and with a bit of guidance you can make a huge shift financially.
TikTok has enabled a new era of money education that makes it more fun and more accessible, no matter what age or stage you are at. I’d like to see how many people I can help with my account, even if they just get one helpful nugget from it!
What other creators are on your For You feed?
My For You Page is quite an eclectic place! For laughs it’s @rowleyy (the man is a genius),
@thishouse500 for house inspo, and for business I love @bylindsayalbanese.
What do you love most about the TikTok community?
The ‘in’ jokes that you wouldn’t understand if you didn’t use the platform. One of the most hilarious places on the internet is the comments section of pretty much any viral video. When I tell you I have cried actual tears from laughing so hard reading the comments section. It’s absolute gold.
What is your favourite TikTok you have made to date and why?
It’s a very simple video but for me it represents a transition. When I started out, I was talking about only my story and the things I’d learned about money. I still do, but in this video I moved to ‘we’ instead of ‘I’. It’s not just my story any more because there is now a growing community in the financial literacy space on TikTok. More and more creators are using TikTok to open up money conversions and more people are joining in. As a community we are gradually improving our understanding of finances and sharing ideas and tips. It’s amazing to be a part of.
