As we continue to celebrate #BlackTikTok , who better to interview for our creator spotlight this week than @cocosarel.
Sarel is one of the stars of our Been Doing It campaign, which appears on billboards across the country and aims to highlight the many different elements of Black culture that are thriving on TikTok.
Beyond starring in our campaign, Sarel is best known for her hilarious commentary and bringing literary inspo to the TikTok community as one of our BookClub laureates. From her brilliant book reviews to her spot-on recommendations - Sarel really does make reading accessible for everyone!
Whether it's a video on UK politics or life in general, there's no denying Sarel offers content that is honest, raw, and always entertaining. On top of this, Sarel is a fantastic storyteller - and we are absolutely here for the journeys she takes us on.
@cocosarel is our #BlackGirlMagic Queen, so we sat down with her to chat about everything Black History Month, and what content and creators inspire her on TikTok.
What does Black History mean to you?
It means EVERYTHING! I love celebrating other talented, educated, bold, brave and beautiful Black people!
Why does TikTok work well for your content?
Tiktok has allowed me to show my personality without filtering myself! It’s the first social media platform that championed being regular and finding people who understand you organically.
What first inspired you to create on TikTok?
Seeing other creators make content made me want to join the conversation. I started making videos talking about the struggles of the pandemic and all my frustrations with the government. It soon became my style of content where I just talked about whatever I felt like talking about.
What is your goal on TikTok?
To continue to build a community of fun people who just wanna laugh, be shady and spread a bit of joy!
What other Black creators are on your For You feed?
Simplysayo, Jonaedits, Moon and rue , Charliemase , Chantayyjayy , Takunda.K and Smilegena .
What do you love most about the TikTok community?
How funny it is! We work as a collective, from the content/ content creators to the comment sections to the duet and stiches. TikTok is a big old family and each cousin is crazier than the last!
What is your favourite TikTok you have made to date and why?
My cheese and MerLOT TikTok! I made it out of frustration with our government throwing Christmas parties and everyone seemed to have had enough as well!
