We are delighted to have signed a multi-year music licensing deal with Dutch Collecting Society, Buma/Stemra 🎺

Music is a fundamental part of the TikTok experience, our huge TikTok sounds library contains a multitude of songs by artists in many different genres. This new deal builds on our strong relationship with the organisation and secures royalty payments for the songwriters, composers and publishers represented by Buma/Stemra.

As part of the partnership deal, we'll be working with Buma/Stemra’s members to deepen their understanding of TikTok and the opportunities it presents to those creating and also performing music.

Who are Buma/Stemra?

As a collection society, Buma/Stemra represent the rights of 30,000 songwriters, composers and music publishers from The Netherlands.  They exist to ensure their members get paid whenever their music is used.

Members include global Dutch EDM stars and TikTok users such as Martin Garrix, whose hit ‘Ocean’ featuring Khalid has been used in over 1.4m video creations and ‘Summer Days’ the soundtrack to 1.2m creations, as well as the renowned Fedde Le Grand and Tiësto.  In addition, prominent Dutch artists, songwriters and producers Kris Kross Amsterdam, Broederliefde, Duncan Laurence, Sam Feldt, Quintino and Nicky Romero also use the platform. Their music is discovered and enjoyed by both Dutch TikTok users but available to a global audience through TikTok’s international reach and significant appeal to music fans.

Buma / Stemra member Sander Huisman of Kriss Kross Amsterdam explains why TikTok is so important to the music creator community: “This is fantastic news. We also regularly use TikTok and see how our fans react to our music via the app. Of course, like other artists, it's a great way for us to connect with fans and promote our music. Music is an essential part of the success of TikTok, so it is of course fair that we, as makers of that music, earn from it thanks to Buma/Stemra.”

Music discovery for mainstream and independent musicians

TikTok is super-charging music discovery and playing an increasingly important role in helping music creators connect with a global audience, providing an open platform for their talent to be recognised, celebrated and used in video creation the world over. With 100 million monthly active users in Europe, and a similar number in the United States, the possibilities our endless!

Ole Obermann Global Head of Music at TikTok: “This deal with Buma/Stemra secures royalty payments to the Dutch song-writing and publishing community and underlines TikTok's commitment to paying creators when their music is used.  Through our platform, a global audience can appreciate and explore their own creativity, using the musical talent of renowned producers, DJs and songwriters from The Netherlands. I'm delighted we've built on our existing relationship and put this multi-year deal in place."

Bernard Kobes, CEO at Buma/Stemra: “We are very happy that the intense but constructive negotiations with TikTok have brought us this agreement. This is good news for our authors and publishers, especially in these days where our members income has diminished in other markets. We look forward developing this partnership deal further with TikTok and our members”.

There's plenty of exciting TikTok music news! Last week, we announced the arrival of John Lennon songs on TikTok in celebration of his 80th birthday. Take a look at Dua Lipa's music video for 'Levitating' which harnessed the creativity of the TikTok community.
