Introducing TikTok Nearby: Discover what’s happening around you

Today we’re announcing the Nearby Feed to help our community discover and connect with the world around them. Whether you're looking for a new restaurant close to home, or a new place to explore during your next trip, the Nearby Feed makes it easy to discover and connect with local content, creators, and businesses wherever you are.

A more localised experience

The Nearby Feed helps people explore what’s happening close to them, from discovering local creators and trending spots to everyday moments that reflect their community. To improve this experience, people will soon see the option to share more accurate information if they choose when they access the Nearby Feed. This helps TikTok show content and recommendations that are more relevant to your location, making it easier to discover what’s trending nearby.

People can access the Nearby Feed from their TikTok home screen. The name of the tab will reflect the location they're near. Posts in the Nearby Feed are shown to people based on location, the topic of the content, and when the content was posted. For example, people can see local content related to travel, events, food & drink and other services based on their interests and engagement. For creators, this means their public posts may be available to people located in the city/region where they posted or tagged a location or service.

If people want to explore a different location, whether they are traveling or doing research for their next trip, they can change their location by selecting the location name and following the steps to update it to view content in that area.

TikTok content won't appear in the Nearby Feed if someone is under 18 years old, has a private account, or sets their post privacy to Friends or Only You. Not all content is eligible for the Nearby Feed. For example, content isn't eligible if it is posted by someone under 18, posted from a private account, set to Friends or Only You, or posted more than 90 days ago.

Rolling out in France, Germany, Italy and the United Kingdom to start, the Nearby Feed also supports local economies by increasing visibility for small businesses, cultural institutions, and local creators. The Nearby Feed helps drive discovery, foot traffic, and real-world engagement. In fact, 46% of TikTok users in the UK have visited a local shop, restaurant, or attraction they saw on the platform (Oxford Economics, 2023).

Your location, your choice

Sharing your location is entirely optional and easy to manage. It’s available only to users who are 18 or older, and people can choose to turn it on or off at any time in their settings. When enabled, and only when the app is in use, TikTok may use a device’s GPS-based location services to provide more accurate, location-based recommendations in features like the Nearby Feed. In iOS, a visible indicator will appear when it’s being accessed.

Please note your in-app pop-up may differ from the above based on your operating system version

TikTok continues to collect and use location information in line with local laws and our Privacy Policy. You can learn more about location on TikTok here.
