We caught up with Patrick to hear his top tips, his experience posting to TikTok and the other TikTok teaching creators he's loving at the moment.

Q: Why did you decide to start using TikTok to share study tips and Leaving Certificate tips?

TikTok offers a unique and effective platform for sharing study tips and Leaving Certificate advice. Its accessibility, short-form content, and adaptability make it an ideal medium to reach, and educate Leaving Certificate students. and... to have a little fun with the subject that I love to teach.

Q: What is your favourite TikTok you have made to date and why?

It would have to be the one I did to help students understand what topics they shouldn’t pick for their Leaving Cert History RSR (Research Study Report). I love the song, and I love Pedro Pascal’s goofy grin.

@lchistorytutor Take my advice! Don’t bite off more than can chew with the #RSR Avoid topics that are too big / broad #lchist #leavingcert #history #research #teachersoftiktok #lchistory #essaywriting #historytiktok ♬ original sound - Patrick Hickey @lchistorytutor

Q: What are your main tips for Leaving Certificate students ahead of the exams? What is the one piece of history exam advice you want every student to know?

Always address the specific question asked. Many students drift into what the Leaving Cert marking scheme refers to as "mere narrative," which can cost them a chance at H1 or H2. Time management plays a crucial role in the LC History exam. Spending excessive time on one section can negatively impact the others. I recommend allocating 45 minutes to the DBQ (Document Based Questions) and 40 minutes to each of the three essays (Higher Level ) or topics (Ordinary Level).

Q: What else or who else are you loving on your TikTok For You feed? Are you following/liking any other teachers or Leaving Certificate content?

@teachwithtadgh brilliantly blends education and entertainment, making learning enjoyable and captivating. He has been an inspiration for me to start using the platform as well.

The @the_lc_team page is another fantastic resource, featuring excellent educators and offering valuable guidance leading up to the exams.

Q: What has been the reaction from your students and fellow teachers since you started posting TikToks?

Since I started posting TikToks, the reactions from both students and fellow teachers have been overwhelmingly positive. Students appreciate the accessibility and engaging nature of the content, as it makes learning more enjoyable and helps them retain information more effectively.

Fellow teachers have also been supportive. They recognise the value of using the platform to reach students and adapt to their learning preferences.
