We are excited to announce that Irish writer @clairewright.author has been shortlisted for ‘BookTok Breakthrough Author' at the 2024 TikTok Book Awards. We recently chatted with Claire about her BookTok experience, her journey on TikTok, and her top summer book recommendation. Dive into the details below!

Q: What first inspired you to create content on TikTok?

A: I was initially hesitant to join TikTok, as I was intimidated by all those cool book transition videos! Once I saw how vibrant the book community was, and the discussions happening, especially around new releases, I knew I had to dive in. As an author, connecting directly with readers, in an authentic way, is so meaningful. If you scroll back far enough on my account, you’ll see my first shaky book transition videos. The support from #BookTok was incredible - people were so encouraging and helpful. It made me want to keep creating content. Now I love experimenting with new styles of videos to showcase my books.

Q: Tell us about your journey with TikTok/BookTok?

A: I started creating content in 2021 before my debut release, so my account has always been a mix of sharing books I love alongside my writing journey. The turning point came when I started focusing my content on my debut novel, which was released in 2022. Sharing details about my experiences as an Irish author writing fantasy books based on Irish mythology resulted in a vast growth in engagement on my videos. My videos may make me seem confident but I’m much more introverted until I’m comfortable around someone and I can relax. That’s what I love about Tiktok, it removes the barrier of shyness I usually feel so I can be myself without any awkwardness.

Q: How does it feel to be shortlisted for the TikTok UK and Ireland Book Awards?

A: When I first saw that email, I was in total disbelief! I actually had my husband confirm it wasn’t a mistake because I never imagined my videos would catch the attention of the judges. To be recognized by the BookTok community in this way, without actively campaigning - it’s enormously rewarding. This nomination is really a tribute to the entire Irish and UK book community that has embraced me. Being able to spotlight storytelling based on Irish culture is something I’m fiercely proud of. Being shortlisted for Breakthrough Author means so much because it shows the bonds authors and readers can form on TikTok.

Q: What is your favourite TikTok video you have made to date and why?

A: My favourite TikTok to date is the video I took of my husband reading aloud a romance scene from my book. I’ve never heard him stumble over words so much! We both cracked up over the awkward intimacy of him bringing the characters to life, sitting right next to each other on the couch. Shortening a twelve-minute video down to just one was the hardest part because there were so many funny moments. But the way he fully committed to roleplaying was impressive.

Q: How do you decide what content to create and share on your TikTok account?

A: I keep a running list on my phone of video ideas related to my books or author life so I can create relevant content. When I scroll hashtags like #BookTok and #IrishTikTok, I pay attention to what people in my niche are engaging with—that helps spark new ideas. I also watch for trending audio I can use in a way that feels true to my brand. Relevancy is key. Nobody wants to see me try out a viral dance! Videos, where I’m casually chatting about Irish mythology influences or showing behind-the-scenes of my writing tend to do best. Keeping things focused on Ireland is fun but also key for me because I know that’s what my audience enjoys.

Q: Which other BookTok creators on TikTok inspire you?

A: I’ve met @readingwith.nic at a few book events in Ireland and she is such a gem. I love her content because it’s so authentic and exactly how she is in person. Her reading is so diverse and my TBR pile is sky-high because of all her great recommendations. I also love book character cosplayers and my favourite is @byhelgam. She recreated my main character in a video and her attention to detail was impeccable, right down to a coat of arms she hand sewed onto a vest. She has cosplayed some of my favourite characters and is exceptionally creative.

Q: In your opinion, what has the BookTok community done for Irish authors and readers?

A: BookTok has been revolutionary for bringing Irish storytelling to the world stage. Before, niche authors struggled for visibility outside limited local readerships. Now, we have access to readers we may never have reached before. Back when only traditionally published authors held prime shelf space, brilliant storytellers were overlooked. BookTok’s inclusive communities smash those barriers. Suddenly an indie author from Louth might find new readership from Mexico, Norway or Australia! BookTok provides a place where I can instantly connect with my readers and fellow writers. I love answering questions about my experience to those starting out as I found that profoundly helpful before I published. I’m just so grateful for this platform that connects people across borders through the power of books!

Q: If you could recommend one Summer read for us, what would it be?

A: I recently read Hitched by @j.f.murray while on holiday in Gran Canaria and I laughed out loud so much, that my children kept asking what was so funny but I couldn’t tell them! It is a fabulous romantic comedy that reminds me of The Hangover, How to Lose A Guy in 10 Days and What Happens in Vegas. If you want to read something that will make you obnoxiously laugh yourself off your sunbed, you should read this!

Q: Finally, what advice would you give to authors who want to establish a presence on TikTok?

A: Your first 3-5 seconds are pivotal. If you don’t hook a viewer in then, they will scroll no matter how entertaining the rest of your video is. Have fun brainstorming within your niche. Make videos that will forever live in your draft folder until there’s a day one makes it out! You never allow anyone to read your first manuscript draft and the same goes for content. You can experiment with different format styles until you find one that fits your personality. The most important tip is to have fun! It’s never too late to join TikTok and once you find your community it becomes an addiction!
