Ahead of the National Ploughing Championship #ploughing2023 next week, we caught up with some of Ireland's top #FarmTok creators. Who better to kick off the series but the Kerry Cowboy himself, Séaghan Ó Súilleabháin! Séaghan began posting about his daily farm life on TikTok in 2020 with his loyal sheepdog Braindí by his side. Since then, his content has attracted nearly 200,000 followers and launched his career as a TV presenter.
Q:How did you get into farming, and what motivated you to share it on TikTok specifically?
A: I was born and reared on a farm in the heart of County Kerry so it was never really a decision. I was born into a farming family and we all pitch in. TikTok was my sister's idea. I had been making videos on the farm for a bit, just for friends and family, and she suggested that if I posted to TikTok they might gain traction and she wasn't wrong!
Q: What is your favourite thing about the National Ploughing Championships?
A: The chance for people from all walks of agricultural life to gather and have the craic. You never come home from the ploughing without having learned something new, but my favourite thing is the community.
Q: What is your favourite TikTok you have made to date and why?
A: My favourite video is when our Labrador, Ruby, came to help our collie, Braindí, bring in the cows for milking. You can watch the video to see how well that worked out for her!
Q: Which other Irish TikTok creators inspire you?
A: There are so many great creators on Irish Tiktok that I really enjoy. But if I had to pick, I'd have to mention @k8_eeee, @jimflano and @mariusmonaghan5. A great mix of education and entertainment there!
Q: What is the best thing about being a FarmTok creator?
A: Getting to connect with other people from farming backgrounds, not just in Ireland but around the world. I've picked up tips on herding dog training from places like Canada and Australia. I love seeing how things are done abroad as well as showcasing Irish agriculture.
