TikTok creator spotlight, @charleymarlowe
Following a fantastic awards season, this week we’re shining a light on the incredible @charley_marlowe TikTok creator, TV presenter and most recently, red carpet host for the BAFTA’s.
With a unique blend of humour, charm, and relatable content, Charley has become a beloved figure in the TikTok community. Her relatable and entertaining videos keep viewers coming back for more, from TV reviews, interviews with famous faces, or her signature style of quick wit. Charley is also a trailblazing LGBTQIA+ presenter – best known for presenting I Kissed A Girl on BBC Three.
With an ability to connect with diverse audiences, provide witty commentary and show her authentic personality, Charley is a unique TikTok creator you don’t want to miss!
We recently caught up with Charley to chat about her journey, favourite TikTok videos, and her experience presenting at the BAFTAs.
Firstly, how were the BAFTA TV awards?!
They were absolutely INCREDIBLE. It’s such an honour to be able to do my dream job, and to do it at the BAFTA’s is just insane. To be surrounded by amazingly talented actors, directors etc who have created some of my favourite tv shows is so surreal. I’ve always been a massive tele fan, more so than anything else, and so I don’t take for granted what an insane opportunity it is to even be there. I was so happy Alma’s Not Normal took home a BAFTA as it’s one of my favourite programmes. I was also buzzing to see so much regional and working class comedy being celebrated!!
What do you love most about hosting from the red carpet?
I love how spontaneous it is! You have no idea who you’re going to get the chance to speak to. I get so excited, I’m the biggest fangirl out there. Every time I work a carpet I’m learning such valuable skills. And if I’m being totally honest, getting to speak to my favourite celebs as a ‘host’ sounds much more official than going up to them at the end of the night a few too many proseccos in, ranting about how much I love them.
Why did you decide to start sharing content on TikTok?
I was studying presenting and media at university and was basically told throughout endless workshops with channels and commissioners that nowadays you kind of need a following. Which, to an extent, I get. If you have an audience, you in theory have an immediate group of people that are going to watch or bring attention to a project. But that was never the reason I started to share content on TikTok. I started because it was so fun, and still is. I realised TikTok was a place that I could be creative, when before I never really felt like I had an outlet. It gave me the chance to express myself and develop my comedy, my presenting - everything I was already studying at uni! So I felt like the two almost merged.
What other creators do you follow on TikTok?
God, there’s so many amazing creators on the platform. I feel like I watch so many. I’m obsessed with anything Death Becomes Her The Musical related at the minute. I’d say it’s a guilty pleasure but there’s absolutely zero guilt involved. In terms of creators, I absolutely love Moyo’s content, he never fails to make me laugh. I love Jack and Ash, I don’t think there’s a single person who doesn’t!! Jackie Adedeji is brilliant and her content is always just as amazing. I’m also a huge fan of anything that involves Lisa Rinna dancing or the Real Housewives in general.
What is your goal on TikTok?
My goal on TikTok is to carry on creating content that I love and hopefully other people love. Tiktok has opened up so many doors for me and created so many opportunities that I will be eternally grateful for. Presenting is my passion and something I always want to be doing so any job that allows me to continue with that is my goal!
What is your favourite TikTok you have made to date and why?
I’d probably say my interview with Nicola Coughlan and Aimee Lou Wood, so I can’t take sole responsibility for creating the content haha. That was the first junket I’d ever done by myself, I wasn’t representing a platform or anything like that. And I was such huge fans of the two of them (still very much am) and so for the interview to have gone down so well with others was a really rewarding feeling. And that video created such a big ripple effect for me as it opened up so many more doors in terms of more junkets, interview opportunities and hosting! Which is crazy when you think about it. I’m so thankful.
What was your first ever TikTok video?
Hahaha oh my god I don’t even want to remember. Probably a cringey dance video or “make my 5th cocktail of the day as it’s lockdown and we have nothing else to do”. Can’t say much has changed.
Finally, what else is on your For You feed?
At the minute it’s just an endless stream of Death Becomes Her The Musical videos which I am incredibly happy about. Also so many videos about Dubai chocolate and labubus (still not really sure what they are). However I did see a fantastic Tiktok the other day a creator made about an iPhone feature that helps motion sickness when travelling in a vehicle!!! Every day I thank my lucky stars Tiktok exists because that tip was truly life changing.
