Celebrating the joy of being young with Khanyisa Jaceni

Full of optimism and energy, Khanyisa Jaceni is one of South Africa’s rising young voices. Here, she tells us more about how Youth Day is a moment for young people to celebrate their youthfulness.

What does Youth Day mean to you?

Youth Day is for young people to celebrate being young and knowing they have their whole lives ahead of them. It’s where life begins!

Can you share any personal experiences or stories that have shaped your understanding of South African history and culture?

I first became aware of South Africa’s deep cultural roots when I attended a concert celebrating traditional music and almost everyone sang along. I realised it only takes something as small as music (although powerful) to bring everyone together, especially young South Africans.

What message do you hope to convey to your followers on Youth Day?

Being young is where it’s at, where life begins. Enjoy it, because you won’t be young forever.

In your opinion, what is the biggest issue South Africa’s youth face today?

I believe education is the greatest issue amongst SA’s youth and that it plays a fundamental role in their development and ability to make something of themselves.

How do you see TikTok and social media as a platform for promoting South African culture and heritage?

TikTok is an authentic platform that allows users to share the beautiful and different cultures they are rooted in. It’s also the perfect place for people to learn more about their cultures and bask in them.

What favourite South African traditions or customs would you like to see preserved for future generations?

I want to see the philosophy of Ubuntu preserved for future generations because people are what they are because of Ubuntu and didn’t get there without the help of others. “We are all part of a big puzzle.”

What advice would you give to other young South Africans who aspire to be content creators?

Get an education before you become overly focused on becoming a content creator or influencer.

Finally, what do you hope to achieve through your work as a TikTok creator, and how do you see yourself contributing to the future of South Africa's creative industry?

I want to be the best person to myself, more than anything. There are so many things a person can do, but there are only so many things that are good for you and that won’t affect your mental health. Personally, as a content creator, I want to always put my best foot forward. In fact, that is how I go about life overall: putting my best foot forward all the time.
