Afrocurl's Founder, Kayla Kim Kay, Talks Monetisation, Representation, and Inclusive Beauty

Meet Kayla Kim Kay, the TikTok creator behind Afrocurl hair products, a lover of all things pink, and a content creator with a vibrant personality that resonates with her 2.3 million TikTok followers. Hailing from the lively city of Cape Town, Kayla radiates energy and enthusiasm in all her endeavours, inspiring the TikTok community to embrace their natural beauty.

What got you into hair content creation, and how did you venture into the TikTok space?

After completing my studies in Fashion Design and working as a fashion buyer, the Covid-19 pandemic prompted me to pursue my dream of starting a hair care brand. Recognising the surge in online entertainment, I decided to leverage TikTok as a platform for creative expression, producing diverse content that defies categorisation.

What excites you most about the merge between ‘hair’ and ‘TikTok’?

Monetising content is essential for turning passion into a sustainable career. Beyond creating enjoyable content, building a brand and utilising available spaces are key steps towards this goal. By establishing a strong brand presence, creators can maximise their earning potential and transform their passion into a lucrative profession.

When you’re not working and going viral on TikTok, what do you do for fun?

At present, my focus is primarily on work, leaving little time for leisure. However, I prioritise spending time with family and traveling whenever possible.

What inspires you daily to keep pursuing your goals?

I see myself as the representation I lacked growing up and being a role model to young girls keeps me motivated. Representation is crucial, and as a creator, I strive to make a positive impact through both my content and business.

Do you have a special, inspirational message for other content creators looking to grow their brands on the platform?

Be yourself. Market saturation is a myth; there's room and a target for everyone. Start with what you have, and success will bring more equipment and capital.

When it comes to your heritage and legacy, what are you most proud of and why? What legacy do you hope to leave behind one day?

I take great pride in my diverse heritage, a beautiful blend of various cultures and backgrounds. My goal is to leave behind a story that inspires many and provides hope despite financial disadvantages. I aspire to be the representation I lacked growing up.

What’s next for you? Will you venture down other creative or beauty avenues?

I'm focusing on beauty avenues. I envision Afrocurl having a global footprint and branching into various business entities under the Kaylakimkay umbrella. I'm proud that my brand brings people together to embrace their hair and challenge beauty standards.

As Kayla Kim Kay's journey continues, her story becomes an empowering narrative that transcends boundaries and stereotypes, inspiring others to embrace their uniqueness and pursue their dreams.
