From book reviews and recommendations, to poetry and cosplay, #BookTok brings together creators, authors, and book lovers across the world through a shared passion for reading. As one of our most thriving communities on TikTok with over 32 million creations to date, #BookTok has not only helped inspire a new generation of literature fans, but continues to transform the publishing world by reigniting a love of books, propelling the careers of new authors and driving book sales.

So forget Hot Girl Summer. This year, it's all about #BookTok Summer! We're excited to announce a programme of activity taking place over the Summer for book lovers to celebrate reading like never before, whether you are sharing your favourite book recommendation on TikTok, heading to the Hay Festival or supporting your local library.

For the first time, TikTok will be partnering with the National Literacy Trust to deliver twenty BookTok Bookshelves in locations across the UK, giving young people everywhere much needed access to books to empower them with the literacy skills they need to succeed in life.

From #Romantasy to #BlackBookTok, TikTok continues to enable new genres, authors and books to be uniquely discovered and has supercharged their success; which is why we are thrilled to announce the return of the TikTok Book Awards in 2024 and the longlist of nominations.

Finally, for the third year running, TikTok will be partnering with Hay Festival, the world’s leading arts and literary festival. As their official Digital Media Partner, we'll be bringing the magic of Hay-on-Wye to the global #BookTok community.

Widening literary access in partnership with the National Literacy Trust

At TikTok, we believe that everyone should have access to the books that they love. That's why we are thrilled to be widening access to books and encouraging an enjoyment of reading with the National Literacy Trust through the BookTok Bookshelves initiative.

Recent research by the National Literacy Trust shows that 1 in 12 young people aged 5-18 (8.6%) don’t have a book of their own at home. The BookTok Bookshelves initiative will deliver 20 bookshelves at key locations across the country, from youth clubs, to community centres, because we know that when young people enjoy reading, the benefits are felt in all areas of their lives.

The bookshelves will be located in eleven National Literacy Trust hub locations across the country; Birmingham, Blackpool, Bradford, Doncaster, Manchester, Middlesborough, Newcastle, Nottingham, Peterborough, Stoke and Swindon.

All of these locations have been identified as areas facing the biggest challenges with literacy where we can make the most difference. Our bookshelves will be located in places with a high footfall of over 13s and will be supported by local youth volunteers.

We are proud to be working with The National Literacy Trust to harness the appeal of the TikTok platform and its ability to connect and inspire young people, to motivate reading for pleasure, striving to boost literacy levels by increasing access to books across the UK. The BookTok Bookshelves initiative is part of our ongoing commitment to championing and supporting young people and their wellbeing, through collaborating with organisations that place community at the heart.
