From your favorite movie clips to reviews and recommendations, TikTok is a unique place that brings together creators, artists, filmmakers and cinema enthusiasts to discover, create and share stories they love.

As we continue to celebrate creativity as the Official Partner of Festival de Cannes (@festivaldecannes), we are bringing back the #TikTokShortFilm competition, now on its third year. The competition reinforces TikTok's commitment to the entertainment and film industry by providing creators an opportunity to showcase their short films and be discovered by over 1 billion people around the world.

From February 21 to March 15, 2024, we invite creators* to take part in this competition that brings together more than 55 countries by submitting their original 1min+ videos in TikTok's signature vertical format using the hashtags #TikTokShortFilm and #TikTokShortFilmCompetition. For the first time ever, the competition will be open to creators in the US. See competition terms and conditions for complete details and requirements.

Winners across three categories: Grand Gagnant, Best Script and Best Directing, will be selected by a highly-acclaimed panel of judges and will be invited by TikTok to present their work and receive their prizes, during the #TikTokShortFilm ceremony that will take place in Cannes (France), at the time of 77th edition of the Festival de Cannes. The Grand Winner will receive a cash prize of 10,000€ (about 10,700 USD), while winners of the Best Script and Best Directing categories will receive 5,000€ (about 5,350 USD) each to support their next creative projects.

A launchpad for established and emerging filmmakers

The affinity of the TikTok community with the entertainment and film industry is reflected in the growth of the #TikTokShortFilm community. Over the past year, more than 2 million videos have been created globally with the hashtag #TikTokShortFilm, which saw an increase of almost 180% in videos created compared to 2022.

#TikTokShortFilm has helped define TikTok's role as a launchpad for both emerging and established filmmakers around the world. Since it first launched in 2022, the #TikTokShortFilm competition has empowered many creators to turn their passion into new career opportunities by helping them break into the entertainment industry. Here are some of the inspiring stories from past winners.

  • Madalena Aragao and Lucas Millions Dutra, who won best script at #TikTokShortFilm 2023 with his short film (Nos) na Cabeça has been named the "Revelation of the Year" at the XXVII Globos de Oruo Gala, one of Portugal's highly-esteemed entertainment awards. Following these accolades, Lucas has also landed deals with leading Portuguese TV channels and is currently writing and directing a web-series for Channel 4.
  • Claudia Cochet, winner of the 'Best Script' award at #TikTokShortFilm 2022, has gained credibility in the industry, thanks to her award. Following the competition, she has been invited to numerous short film festivals, having co-written two feature films and directed a pilot for a multi-platform series.
  • Shinichiro Ueda, one of the winners of #TikTokShortFilm 2023, directed One Cut of the Dead, the film that inspired Final Cut, which was featured at the opening ceremony of the 75th Festival de Cannes and directed by Michel Hazanavicius, one of France's greatest directors.

Matej Rimanić, whose film, Love in Plane Sight, won the #TikTokShortFilm Grand Prix, encourages everyone to be a creator to open doors to more opportunities in the industry. "Since we started posting on TikTok, all kinds of amazing things have been happening. I've had an opportunity to organize the biggest TikTok tourism campaign in Slovenia and have landed a role at Dunking Devils Studios, the best TikTok content creation agency in the Adriatic region. I would encourage you to be a creator and not just consume content - a world of opportunities await."

A new window to the world of cinema

The world of cinema fully unfolds on TikTok, offering creatives, entertainment enthusiasts and industry insiders an opportunity to express themselves and connect with a global community that includes everyone from costume designers to stunt coordinators and studios. Celebrated actors like Anthony Hopkins (@anthonyhopkins), Eva Longoria (@evalongoria), Lupita Nyong’o (@lupitanyongo) and Reese Witherspoon (@reesewitherspoon) are also engaging with fans by sharing elements of their lives and careers on set, favorite behind the scenes moments and so much more.

The platform is also where trends are blooming. Recently in the US, Saltburn, starring Barry Keoghan and Jacob Elordi, gained the attention of the FilmTok community with its unique characters and film sequences. By captivating the community with over 160k posts using #SaltBurn, the film increased streaming viewership and Jacob Elordi gave TikTok a special shoutout while hosting Saturday Night Live.

Join us as we continue to celebrate and experience the creativity and magic of cinema at Festival de Cannes 2024 through the third edition of the #TikTokShortFilm competition. We can't wait to see what you discover, create and share with our global community.
