Harnessing creativity for sustainability awareness and advocacy

On TikTok, our community is passionate about making a difference and having a positive impact on our world. Harnessing the power of creativity, they share content and initiatives promoting environmentalism and climate activism, along with the many ways everyone can get involved.

Some popular environmental themes that have inspired the TikTok community over the past year include:

  • Nature conservation: Popular hashtags such as #nature, #ocean and #climateaction have garnered 44 billion, 17 billion, and over 1 billion views respectively in the past year, showing our community loves creating content that celebrates, protects and restores nature through innovative solutions.

  • Sustainable living and responsible consumption: #vegan (12 billion views), #thrifting (4 billion+ views), #sustainablity (3 billion+ views) are the most popular hashtags loved by the TikTok community in the past year. From creators showcasing creative skills and DIY tutorials upcycling home furniture, to communities advocating for natural and self-sufficient lifestyles, our community is looking to incorporate sustainability in all facets of their lives.

Advancing our commitment to climate literacy

Trust and authenticity fuel the creativity of TikTok—and we believe we have an important role to play in empowering informed climate discussions on our platform. This week, we are introducing several initiatives that will help reduce harmful climate change misinformation while elevating authoritative information year-round.

On April 21, we will begin to ramp up enforcement of a new climate change misinformation policy which removes climate change misinformation that undermines well-established scientific consensus, such as content denying the existence of climate change or the factors that contribute to it. As we do for all misinformation policies, we will work with independent fact-checking partners when applying this policy to help assess the accuracy of content.
