As we wrap up Black History Month, we interviewed the one and only - @mirendarosenberg! Mirenda is an American living in Donegal sharing content on her life living in the countryside spending time growing produce in her homestead. With more than half a million TikTok followers, Mirenda's videos range from cooking, gardening and trying to be zero waste. We spoke to Mirenda about her thoughts on being black in Ireland, and what inspired her to start her TikTok journey. Find out more about Mirenda below!

Q: What first inspired you to create on TikTok and why?

A: My TikTok journey was inspired by my best friend Sandy. It was just after lockdown and my work as an educator and musician ceased. I began leaning into my homesteading work and my best friend suggested I share it on TikTok…but I suspect she was simply sick of listening to me go on and on about beef fat and growing spuds. Her loving redirection changed my life because TikTok is the ideal place to share my daily activities.

Q: What does Black History Month mean to you?

A: It’s extremely personal to me because Black History Month makes me feel recognised and appreciated. Only 1.5% of the population in Ireland is black. The majority of which have advanced degrees and are contributing positively to society. However, we are often overlooked or perceived negatively as drains on critical public resources. I love that Black History Month highlights our positive contributions.

Q: What other Black creators are on your For You feed?

A: I passionately follow folks who teach me things, four come to mind immediately. I adore Dr. Oikeh (@dr.blondieperes) because she empowers us with knowledge about our bodies. Also, Joris’ (@joris_explains) impact on my understanding of diversity and inclusion has been profound. Portia (@portia.noir) calmly role models navigating micro aggressions while sharing sociological takes. Finally, Bo (@bothegoattv) shares amazing recipes and cooking techniques.

Q: What is your favourite TikTok you have made to date and why?

A: It’s a tie. Tallow Series 3 Part 2 made me emotional because it’s the first time I realised how invested folks are in #TallowTok. Also, I love the “Besties at the Shandon” post because I got to share my bestie with TikTok and see folks respond to her beautifully.

Q: How does it feel to represent the Black Irish community on TikTok?

A: It’s both surreal and wonderful. I feel the burden to represent all blackness even though we are not a monolith. However, I am proud because much of my Irish following has embraced me in a lovely, supportive way.
