This month cities across the globe celebrated fashion week. To mark this stylish moment we're spotlighting Irish FashionTok creators. First up is the ever-charming fashionista, @kategrantmodel! Kate has broken new ground in the fashion world by being the first model in Ireland and the UK with Down's Syndrome. She is living proof that with ambition and perseverance, nothing can stand in the way of you and your dreams. We caught up with Kate to talk about all things TikTok, and what it's like to be a person with Down's Syndrome in the fashion world.

Q: How did you get into modeling, and what motivated you to share it on TikTok specifically?

A: I think every child has a dream when they are younger. Whether it is to become a firefighter, an olympian or a president. Some are more realistic than others. Although becoming a model may sound easily obtainable, as someone with Down’s Syndrome it was a dream that sounded crazy to society. So as my childhood dream came true and I was booking jobs, I felt the need to ensure that other people with disabilities knew that we are not limited to what society deems us to be. This is what led me to post on TikTok.

Q: You proudly state that you are the first model in Ireland with Down’s Syndrome - how does it feel to represent such an important community on an international scale?

A: Representing disabilities through being the first model with Down’s Syndrome in Ireland makes me so so proud of what I have achieved for equality and diversity here in this country and for others internationally. I am so privileged to be an ambassador for our little country.

Q: What is your favourite TikTok you have made to date and why?

A: I love so many of my TikToks, so this is a really hard question. I’d have to say my vlog of a recent fashion show. It’s my favorite because it shows how I work on an equal footing as the other models which I hope inspires equality and diversity. However, why it’s particularly my favorite is because it’s fun, and to me that’s what TikTok is all about…having fun and showing what I love to do.

Q: Which other Irish TikTok creators inspire you and in particular influence your sense of style?

A: There’s so many great influencers flying the flag for Ireland, so this is quite difficult to answer. Someone who I have been watching a good bit recently is @laurenwhelxn. I really enjoyed her videos at London fashion week, and her sense of style is amazing.

Q: What advice do you have for other people with Down’s Syndrome who are looking to start a modeling career?

A: I think the main advice I would offer is to be confident. Through self-belief and perseverance anything can be achieved. This applies to anyone that has a dream. If you believe in yourself and work hard, you will do it.

Q: What has been the highlight of your modeling career so far?

A: I think a highlight and the biggest game changer for my career was being part of the ‘Benefit cosmetics’ campaign. Having photos of myself in Benefit stores internationally was such a pinch me moment. I am hoping that my career as a model will continue to create more pinch me moments and that, with every photoshoot opportunity, will get bigger and better.
