In celebration of International Women's Day it is our pleasure to spotlight baker and entrepreneur, Alice Kelly known on TikTok as @fromscratchbaker.
Q: What does International Women's Day mean to you?
A: Growing up I wasn’t aware there was a day to celebrate women and bring attention to the important related topics. Now, being a little bit older and more aware of the issues women are still facing; it has been a wake-up call! International Women’s Day has helped me find so many inspirational women through social media and that means so much to me.
Q: What female creators on TikTok inspire you?
A: @irishbudgeting Caz is one of those creators that whenever I see their videos pop up, I never skip it. I’m really passionate about saving money and budgeting (hence renovating my own bakery box instead of buying a new one.) With her budgeting videos and her addictive “feeding five people for €5” I couldn’t have not mentioned her!
@madisontevlin I saw one of Madison's videos quite a while ago and was in awe. Madison highlights her career as a model with Down syndrome. Her positivity around bringing awareness to Down syndrome and bashing all the stereotypes surrounding it. What an admirable person!
@julieevlorentzen Last, and by no means least is Julie. Julie and her wife Camilla have made one of the biggest impacts surrounding female lgbtq+ partnerships online. They have documented their challenges with pregnancy and grief from day one. Their “keep-going” attitude has kept me a fan of theirs for life!
Q: What first inspired you to create on TikTok?
A: I started filming the bakery renovations almost a month before I started posting! I wanted to share the videos with my friends and family. I never really thought about posting on TikTok until someone who was renovating a caravan had popped up on my own feed. I decided to post one video and if I didn’t like TikTok, I’d delete it. I went to bed and woke up to millions of views and 100,000 new followers who wanted to see the bakery renovations.
Q: What is your goal on TikTok?
A: My goal is to make videos that people can smile at. It sounds basic, but it’s true. Creating recipes and DIY has become my favourite thing to do and what better than to my passion for the world. As long as people are enjoying my videos I’ll keep posting them!
Q: What is your favourite TikTok you have made to date and why?
A: My favourite Tiktok is probably my brother and I trying Japanese snacks. I managed to convince him to be in a video and it’s fair to say octopus-flavoured Pringles weren’t our favourite.
Q: What is your favourite recent trend on TikTok?
A: I love the current #deinfluencing trend which shows people what they really DON’T need to buy. It’s saved me a few dozen late-night amazon shopping sprees.
Q: What else or who else is on your TikTok For You feed?
A: Unsurprisingly I get a lot of cake videos. Nobody would be able to guess the rest of the genres. My for you page jumps from “get ready with me’s” to oddly helpful life hacks that I will never use.
One TikToker that has always come up on my for you feed is Eoin Reardon [@pintofplane]. A fellow Irish person with MUCH better woodwork skills than my own. I can’t say I understand everything he says in his videos but that doesn’t make them any less favourable.
