Holocaust Remembrance Day gives us the opportunity each year to honor the victims of the Holocaust on the anniversary of the liberation of the concentration camp Auschwitz-Birkenau. At TikTok, we've continued to commemorate this day as a time to reflect on the importance of listening to others' experiences to help see the humanity we all share. We invite our community to join together on January 27th as #WeRemember the Holocaust by elevating the voices of Holocaust survivors, connecting our community to educational resources, and partnering with experts to help fight antisemitism.
Commemorating Holocaust Remembrance Day
Remembering the Holocaust requires fostering a supportive space for difficult discussions to take place. Authentic self-expression is a key part of TikTok, and we want everyone to feel safe expressing themselves and finding communities that support them.
For Holocaust Remembrance Day, we're launching a dedicated hub within the app, in partnership with the World Jewish Congress and UNESCO, featuring Holocaust survivors Tova, Dana, and Gabriella, who share their experiences of living through the Holocaust and messages of hope for future generations. By bravely speaking about what they witnessed, these women are helping keep alive the legacies of those whose lives were taken.
Additionally, we invite our community to continue learning about the Holocaust and supporting those impacted by it through the hashtag #WeRemember, where they'll find helpful facts and heartfelt remembrances of loved ones who perished then.
Learning from experts
Education is a powerful tool for counteracting hate, and we work with experts to help keep our community informed. We regularly train our safety professionals to help them better detect hateful behavior, symbols, terms, and offensive stereotypes as well as to help them recognize and protect counter speech.
We also work with experts who educate people about the Holocaust. In 2021, we co-initiated the TikTok Shoah Commemoration and Education Initiative, a global collaborative of over twenty Holocaust memorial sites and museums. Through this award-winning initiative, the organizations receive training and workshops on how they can use the platform to commemorate the victims of the Holocaust.
To provide our community with access to trustworthy information, we redirect searches for terms, such as Hitler and Holocaust, to the World Jewish Congress and UNESCO's aboutholocaust.org website. Since our partnership began in 2022, the website has received more than 3 million views from TikTok. We also place banners containing links to the website on videos with hashtags related to the Holocaust as well as on relevant hashtag pages. Within the last month alone, we've displayed reminders about aboutholocaust.org over 4 million times.
This May, as part of Yom HaShoah, we're sending a group of TikTok creators to Poland and Hungary as part of the International March of the Living's annual education program. While there, renowned scholars on the history of the Holocaust, as well as Holocaust survivors, will teach the creators, and the trip will culminate with a march down the path from Auschwitz to Birkenau to honor the victims.
"As a global Holocaust organization that is committed to safeguarding Holocaust memory and its lessons, the International March of the Living is looking forward to partnering with TikTok for our 2024 program. As we mark International Holocaust Remembrance Day, we must face the grave reality that our educational mission, 80 years after the Holocaust, is more important than ever. We owe it not only to the survivors’ generation but also to the younger generations." —Revital Yakin Krakovsky, Deputy CEO of the International March of the Living
